Do you ever look back at old pictures and say “What in the world was I thinking?!?!” Well…welcome to our dining room (circa 3 or 4 years ago).
Oh my, that is a lot of burnt orange!! I’m not gonna lie, I was literally doing a happy dance the day I painted over it.
Fast forward a few years and here is what it looked like this past Christmas.
Now, let me say, there was nothing wrong with the room like this but some aspects were just “pretty” and not actually meeting our needs. For example, I liked the bench seat in the window but it was not exactly the most comfortable seat in the house. I honestly don’t recall seeing anyone sit on it, ever!
I realized it was time to make some changes. I wanted a more simple, classic, comfortable and inviting look so I sat down and started working on an design plan/mood board. Here’s what I came up with.
I tried to incorporate a lot of items that we already own to help cut down on cost (the ladder, globe lights, ottoman, loveseat, slipcovered chairs and fiddle leaf fig tree). Keep in mind, this is a mood board, I don’t necessarily have or plan to buy these exact brands or items. The board is simply a way for me to convey my ideas to you.
Anyway, I placed what we already have in the room and today I’m sharing the progress so far.
I swear, those big ol’ windows still make my heart sing! I loved them the moment I first walked in the house and I still love them today!
Sorry, I got distracted. 🙂
Back to the task at hand…You’ll notice the mood board includes a different table than what we currently own. I found our table on Craigslist a few years ago. We’ve enjoyed it but want a more natural and rustic look now. If you are in the Charlotte area and are interested in buying it, the table and four matching chairs are for sale.
So far, this little corner is where the biggest changes have occurred. I took the bench seat out and moved our loveseat in and oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVE it in here. I am still on the hunt for a floor lamp and some throw pillows but without a doubt the loveseat stays.
If I’m being honest, something about our light fixture bugs me in a major way. I think it’s the yellow color of the tea stained glass. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do about that yet. I might try taking the glass off and using Edison Bulbs, although I’m afraid they will give off too much light (we are not huge fans of overhead lighting). If that doesn’t work out, I might switch to the pendant light in my design plan. Either way, I’ll keep you posted.
By the way, this is the mirror I chose. (You can see my mirror post here)
As for the accessories, I’m still working on that but I quickly threw together a mood board to give you an idea of what I’m thinking. I love the brass on the new mirror and I would like to add more of that element. I’m also envisioning some touches of navy, black, animal print and maybe some green (although I didn’t include it on the board).
And just in case you are wondering how the family feels about the changes…I snapped this picture of our sweet baby girl as we were eating dinner, I’d say she approves! (Side note – you can see the edge of the ladder and the globe lights in the left corner of this picture)
So that’s our progress for now. We still need a rug, table and a few accessories but so far I’m pleased with how it’s coming together. In a perfect world the room would be done in a day but that’s not reality. It takes time. I don’t want to rush this process and buy things I don’t love just to fill the space. Been there, done that and I have an old picture of a burnt orange room to prove it!
